Tiered pricing for WooCommerce Product Bundles

Last updated on 5 min read

Alondra Plus can give your bundles quantity discounts, just like your other products. This page walks through three examples from a small coffee shop, with the pricing group in the admin and what the customer sees on the product page and in the cart.

What you need: bundle pricing needs Alondra Plus with an active license, and the WooCommerce Product Bundles plugin. The free Alondra plugin on its own does not price bundles: Product Bundles prices them as usual.

Choosing a bundle in a pricing group

Create a pricing group as usual (see Creating Tiered Prices). When you search for a bundle in the rule's Product is box, it offers two kinds of option:

  • "… (all bundled products)" — the bundle itself. The tiers count how many bundles the customer buys, and a percentage tier is applied to every product inside the bundle.
  • "… — in …" — one product, only when it is sold inside that bundle. The tiers count how many units of that product the customer puts in one bundle.

Example 1: a discount for buying several packs

The Origin Sampler Pack holds one bag of Yirgacheffe (€25.00) and one bag of Sumatra (€20.00), and each bag keeps its own price, so one pack costs €45.00. The pricing group picks the pack itself and has two percentage tiers: 90% of the price for 2 to 3 packs, and 80% from 4 packs.

With 4 packs chosen, each bag inside the pack drops to 80% of its price: €20.00 and €16.00, so one pack costs €36.00 instead of €45.00.

The cart charges the same prices on every line: 4 packs at €36.00 make €144.00.

Example 2: more bags of the same coffee in a mix-and-match box

The Build Your Own Box is set up in Product Bundles so the customer picks at least 3 bags, with 0 to 3 bags of each coffee.

The pricing group picks the two products inside this box ("Yirgacheffe Filter Roast — in Build Your Own Box" and "Sumatra Nightfall Roast — in Build Your Own Box"): 90% of the price for 2 bags of the same coffee, and 85% for 3. These prices only apply inside the box. The same coffees bought on their own keep their normal price.

With 3 bags of Yirgacheffe and 2 of Sumatra, the Yirgacheffe costs €21.25 a bag (85% of €25.00) and the Sumatra €18.00 a bag (90% of €20.00). The box comes to €99.75 instead of €115.00. The "From" price is the cheapest box the customer can build: three bags of Sumatra at €17.00.

The cart charges the same: €63.75 for the Yirgacheffe and €36.00 for the Sumatra, €99.75 in total.

Example 3: a kit sold at one price

The Brew Starter Kit (a hand grinder, a glass dripper and a bag of coffee) has a single price of €79.00, and the products inside it are not priced on their own. The pricing group picks the kit and has two percentage tiers: 100% for 1 to 2 kits, and 80% from 3 kits.

Because the kit has one price, the product page shows the price table like any other product. With 3 kits chosen, each kit costs €63.20 instead of €79.00.

The cart charges 3 kits at €63.20, €189.60 in total.

Good to know

  • When a pricing group picks a bundle whose products keep their own prices (Examples 1 and 2), only percentage tiers apply to the products inside it. A fixed amount is a price for the whole line, so it is not spread over the products and has no effect there.
  • A product inside a bundle can only get its own tiers when the bundle prices that product individually (the Priced Individually option in Product Bundles).
  • A pricing group that picks a product on its own (without "— in …") prices that product when it is bought on its own, not when it is inside a bundle.
  • If several pricing groups apply to the same product, the group with the lowest Priority value wins, as with any other product.
